COMPETITION TRIBUNAL THE COMPETITION TRIBUNAL (Established by the Competition Act No. 89 of 1998) The Competition Tribunal was established in terms of the Competition Act No. 89 of 1998. It is responsible for adjudicating prohibited practice and merger cases. In terms of section 35 of the Competition Act, 1998, the Chairperson of the Competition Tribunal hereby invites applications for the following position in the T r i bu n a l ( Pr e t or i a) . CASE MANAGER Total Cost to Company Annual Salary Starting at R 849, 837 Reporting to the Head of Case Management, the incumbent will be required to work closely with other Case Managers, Registry and Tribunal Members in facilitating the role of the Competition Tribunal by managing processes, information gathering, analyzing available information from other jurisdictions for possible local relevance, , and provision of ongoing support to members, to ensure high quality decision making results. The role shall include the following: Key Responsibilities Contribute to the adjudicative process by facilitating panel preparation and readiness and contributing to the drafting of decisions and reasons. Facilitate smooth hearings in the adjudicative process by managing party involvement and logistics jointly with Registry. Contribute to Stakeholder awareness KPI achievement by contributing to and monitoring the publication of relevant communications. Build own capacity and knowledge base and conduct ongoing research to increase the Tribunals information databases. Ensure effective Case administration and controls including document management and flow Contribute to Stakeholder awareness KPI achievement by contributing to and monitoring the publication of relevant communications Qualifications, Skills and experience The applicant must have a minimum of an LLB degree. Completion of articles would be an advantage. Knowledge of the Competition Act 89 of 1998 is essential. At least three years’ experience in Competition Law or related regulatory environment is mandatory. Research experience using electronic media is required. Other work experience in related fields will serve as an advantage. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Planning, organising and time management skills. Ability to work under pressure. ECONOMIST Total Cost to Company Annual Salary Starting at R 849, 837 Reporting to the Head of Case Management, the incumbent will be required to assist the Senior Economist in providing expert assistance and analysis to Tribunal Members and case managers on complicated economic issues in mergers and prohibited practice cases before the Tribunal throughout the adjudicative process. To contribute to increased economic understanding in the sphere of competition law in the Tribunal. The role shall include the following: Key Responsibilities Give advice and support to Panel Members and case managers on economic issues in mergers and prohibited practice cases before the Tribunal. Contribute to building Competition Economics skills and capacity within the Tribunal. Manage cases as required, including preparing briefings for the panel, attending hearings, assessing economic data, conducting research on economic aspects of cases. Represent the Tribunal in inter departmental and international arenas in respect of competition economics by publication, commentary on policies and research of developments. Qualifications, Skills and experience The applicant must have a minimum of Honours Degree in Economics. Knowledge of the Competition Act 89 of 1998 will be an added advantage.
